CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Sept. 5, 2021) — Those craving an arts fix should head to downtown Martinez this month for “Martinez Arts Creates,” an exhibit featuring Concord Arts Association member Denise Hillman.
Main Street Arts Gallery will host a reception for Hillman and the other 18 artists on Saturday, Sept. 11.
But even as the East Bay arts community strives to move forward, there was some sad news from the Clayton Theatre Company as the troupe decided to cancel its fall production of “The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.”
“The health and safety of our valued patrons, artists, crew and staff is of the utmost importance,” managing director Roxanne Pardi said, citing the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19.
In entertainment news of a different variety, two Concord men advanced to stage 2 of “American Ninja Warriors.” The final competitor will win $1 million.
Back to the drawing board: If you’re interested in how Contra Costa County will redraw its supervisorial districts, you can RSVP for a series of Online Mapping Workshops. The county will base the new districts on data from the 2020 U.S. Census.
Coastal cleanup: Residents can sign up to help clean up six regional parklands on Saturday, Sept. 18. The East Bay Regional Park District also encourages self-guided neighborhood coastal cleanups.

Bev Britton graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of North Dakota and moved to the Bay Area with her soon-to-be husband Jim in 1986. She was features editor at the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek before becoming managing editor of the Contra Costa Sun in Lafayette in 1995. She retired from newsrooms in 2001, but an ad for the Clayton Pioneer drew her back in.
