CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (August 25, 2024) — Following an Assembly bill that restricts cell phone use by students during the school day, several local schools are placing more limits on their usage.

Some are even going cell phone-free, with students placing phones in a pouch at the beginning of the day. “It helps the kids be less distracted,” said Northgate Principal Kelly Cooper. “And our teachers have said they’ve seen less issues like cheating, issues between students and fights on campus.” Read the complete story.

Charges in Clayton assault: Darius Darabian of Clayton was arrested for attempted murder and elder abuse after a woman was stabbed multiple times on Indian Wells Way, according to Clayton PD. For the latest report from Concord PD, click here.

Victories in the pool: Forest Park and Sun Valley tied for the Division III team title at the Contra Costa County Swim Meet. Rancho San Miguel defeated Dana Hills to become Division 1 champs. Meanwhile, three swimmers for the Terrapins did well at the USA Swimming Futures Championships in Sacramento.

And to think it’s already been 50 years since Concord hosted a swim event for the ages, with world records being set every day. “It was six days of swimming never equaled in the United States,” noted Swimming World magazine.
