CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Aug. 6, 2021) – Contra Costa County announced its Redistricting effort on Friday. This once-a-decade process will redraw the boundaries for Supervisorial districts based on the U.S. Census results.

Because of this, the County will hold its first public hearing on Redistricting on August 10, 2021, at 9 am.

Redistricting refers to the regular process of adjusting the lines of voting districts in response to population shifts within the County. Every ten years, the government must redraw supervisorial districts so that each district represents a substantially equal population. This process ensures that each Supervisor represents about the same number of people.

Redistricting uses U.S. Census data. The Census Bureau plans to release its results by September 30, 2021.

Public outreach

“The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors is committed to a robust Redistricting and public outreach process with public hearings, public workshops, and a website with resources, including online mapping tools,” said Board Chair, Supervisor Diane Burgis. “We will seek community input in selecting the next district map for supervisorial districts in our County and look forward to engaging the public in this important endeavor.”

On August 10, the County Board of Supervisors will hold a Public Hearing on the required adjustment of boundaries of supervisorial districts. It will also provide an overview of the redistricting process. In addition, it will review the new redistricting dedicated website and provide information about communities of interest.

Officials will explain how to submit draft maps once Census Data becomes available and describe planned public outreach and availability of mapping software training. The Board will receive input from the public as well.
