CONCORD, CA (Sept. 6, 2022) — Contra Costa County is under an excessive heat warning this week. The high temperatures have created dangerous conditions.

At the recommendation of the Contra Costa Fire Protection District, the City of Concord closed its open space areas over the Labor day holiday weekend. The closed areas include Lime Ridge Open Space and the open space areas within Newhall Community Park.

With temperatures still at near record levels, the open space areas will remain closed through Thursday, Sept. 8

In addition to the health dangers, extreme high temperatures will increase the risk of fire danger. Closure of the open spaces will protect the public and firefighters, and preserve firefighting resources.

According to ConFire, all of our fires are caused by human activity and are preventable. Please use extreme caution when you must be outdoors to prevent inadvertent wildfires.

UPDATED: The City will operate a designated cooling center this week:

  • Sept. 6-7: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Concord Senior Center, 2727 Parkside Circle
  • Sept. 8-9: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Willow Pass Community Center 2748 E. Olivera Rd.
