So This Happened…Week of Dec. 2-8, 2024
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Dec. 9, 2024) — Clayton Police Chief Richard McEachin announced his resignation, effective Dec. 19.
After two years in Clayton, he will become the chief in Atwater in the Central Valley, where he resides. The city of Clayton plans to hire an executive search firm to assist in recruiting both an interim and permanent replacement.

Canines to the rescue: Specially trained dogs Mara and Gabby are helping first responders at Contra Costa Fire Protection District’s Station 12. “Our peer support canine teams provide a unique and effective form of therapy that helps our firefighters cope with the challenges they face by reducing stress, improving morale and fostering a sense of camaraderie within our organization,” said Battalion Chief Bob Atlas.
Is blue best? Pioneer columnist Nathalie Montijo looks at the impact of the diet in the so-called “Blue Zones,” which have longer than average life expectancies. Among the keys are eating a whole-food, plant-based diet and participating in daily rituals to reduce stress.
Meanwhile, Debra Morris explores the differences between yams and sweet potatoes, focusing on what you can find at the local farmers market this holiday season.
And, Rich Eber dives into the fare at local all-you-can-eat restaurants, including Golden Corral, China Wall and Fuji Buffet.
