CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Sept. 10, 2022) — Congressman James P. McGovern (D-MA), Chairman of the House Rules Committee and Co-chair of the House Hunger Caucus, recently paid a visit to White Pony Express (WPE) to learn about the innovative work being done in the Bay Area to address the crisis of food waste. McGovern, who is the House lead on the Food Donation Improvement Act (H.R. 6251), made a tour of WPE’s food distribution center and learned about WPE’s impact across the county.

Headquartered in Pleasant Hill, CA, WPE picks up and delivers 12,000 pounds of fresh, nutritious food at no cost to its network of 80+ nonprofit partners, from large shelters to under-resourced schools to church pantries—every day, seven days a week, 364 days a year.

McGovern led the push to secure a White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, which will be held in September 2022. He will bring the innovative things he learns during visits like this one to the conference.

“We hope Representative McGovern will share WPE’s spirit and profound community impact with conference attendees—and perhaps even include us at the table,” says Eve Birge, Executive Director at WPE. “WPE’s volunteer-powered model is scalable and sustainable. It bridges abundance and need and can be replicated virtually anywhere.”

About White Pony Express: WPE’s mission is to eliminate hunger and poverty by delivering the abundance all around us to those in need—with love. Founded by Dr. Carol Weyland Conner in 2013, WPE has rescued over 20 million pounds of fresh, nutritious food and delivered it free to organizations that feed hungry people.
