While stuck inside, keep busy with some home upkeep projects

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY—Being cooped up over the holidays is a bummer for sure, though keeping busy with cold weather maintenance items can put some money back in your pocket and offer a welcomed distraction to quarantine life. Here are some simple items that can make a big difference.

Freezing temperatures can cause your pipes to burst.  Leave all exterior water fixtures with a slow drip which will keep the water flowing and prevent damage.

Cold drafts from your windows can be costly on your heating bills.  Run your fingers along the edge of the window to feel for drafts.  If found, seal with weatherstripping.

Check for missing or fallen insulation in your attic and crawlspaces and replace or repack.

If you have a fireplace, close your damper to keep the cold draft from entering your home (but don’t forget to open when using!)

After checking those items off of your list, if you still feel stir crazy, dig through those closets for old clothes and blankets and drop us an email. We are collecting items and assembling care packages to help support the homeless and other charities in need over the holidays. If you’d like to donate some items, send me an email.

Wishing you a safe and healthy holiday season from Safe at Home.
