CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Aug. 15, 2021) — After losing her home in Talent, Ore., to a fire last fall, Kris Diaso found that focusing on coaching students helped her heal.

Community activities: The Downtown Pleasant Hill shopping center will also host a free Chalk Festival, noon-3 p.m. Aug. 21, in the plaza near Jack’s Restaurant. In another outdoor opportunity, naturalist Ashley Adams will lead “Birding for Beginners,” 8:30-10 a.m. Aug. 21 at Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve in Antioch. Or head over to any county library branch Aug. 16-21 for a free comic swag bag. And after meeting in person for the first time since the pandemic began, the Clayton Business & Community Association (CBCA) is looking forward to hosting community events soon. Residents can learn more at an open house 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 26 in the courtyard of Endeavor Hall.

Bev Britton graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of North Dakota and moved to the Bay Area with her soon-to-be husband Jim in 1986. She was features editor at the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek before becoming managing editor of the Contra Costa Sun in Lafayette in 1995. She retired from newsrooms in 2001, but an ad for the Clayton Pioneer drew her back in. The family moved to Lake Wildwood in the Gold Country a few years ago - but working at the Pioneer keeps her in touch with her old neighborhoods in Concord and Clayton.
