CLAYTON, CA (June 9, 2023) — A committee of eight jurists selected winners in the second annual Clayton Pride Parade Poster Contest, awarding students for their creativity, use of color, and balance of illustrations and words.

The contest has two divisions, K-5 and 6-12th grade. Entries could be paintings, drawings or watercolors.

Fourth-grader Owen Quady-Lee of Mt. Diablo Elementary won first place for K-5. Second place went to first-grader Charlie Yalenty of Bancroft Elementary, and third place to second-grader Grayson McChesney of Mt. Diablo Elementary.

Tenth-grader Juju Yoshii of Northgate High took top honors in the 6-12 grade division, with Northgate 10th-grader Red Mannion in second and ninth-grader Sofia Barnett of Clayton Valley Charter in third.

“I chose to draw the ring of children in The Grove, because I feel that it represents the community and the acceptance of others no matter who they are,” Yoshii says of the Clayton sculpture. “The ring of children are holding hands as if they are simply friends and happy to be with each other. I hope everyone in the Clayton community feels the same.”

An award ceremony for all artists was held June 1 at Skipolini’s Pizza in Clayton. The restaurant made it a dine-and-donate event to support Clayton Pride Parade’s efforts to make the town a safe community for everyone.
