CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Sept. 25, 2022) — The first five weeks of high school football are in the books and there are two local schools, Concord and Northgate, with undefeated records.

At this same stage of the season, perennial powers De La Salle and Clayton Valley Charter have combined for four wins and five defeats.

Concord and Northgate are both 5-0 and are rewarded with byes this week before they start Diablo Athletic League play Oct 7.

The Minutemen won only one game in each of the past two seasons but will enter DAL Valley Division play as favorites to win the championship. Their opening league game against College Park (2-2) Oct. 7 may be the title decider. Northgate won the DAL Valley title a year ago and was then moved to the Foothill Division where the Broncos will face a daunting five-game schedule.

De La Salle (3-2) also has a bye this week, something both the players and coaching staff probably welcome. The Spartans lost for the third time in their past four games at Owen Owens Field and two of those losses are to Folsom (4-1). The Sacramento-area power scored the winning touchdown with 15 seconds left Friday night to hand DLS a 24-20 defeat. In the past 13 months De La Salle has lost four games by a combined 11 points to teams from Northern California after going 30 years from 1992-2021 without ever losing once to a school north of Fresno.

Mt. Diablo (1-3) ended a three-game losing streak to start the season when the Red Devils defeated San Lorenzo (0-3) 27-6 on Saturday.

Clayton Valley Charter (1-3) returns this Friday after a bye week to visit undefeated Jesuit (5-0) in Carmichael.
