Jerry North, May 12, 1940 — Oct. 18, 2022

CONCORD, CA (Oct. 31, 2022) — Jerry North, the family’s beloved patriarch, died on Oct. 18, 2022.

Jerry was born May 12, 1940, in Waubay, S.D. He was the son of Earl North and Ruth Holzerland and the oldest of four. As a teen, he moved with his family from the farm in Waubay to Lead, S.D. While in high school there, he met the love of his life, Norma Long.

Jerry and Norma were married in June 1963. In 1967, they moved to Concord in search of new opportunities and Jerry transferred employment as an electrician from the Homestake Mine in Lead to the Brickyard in Port Costa.

Jerry began a 26-year career with Gannett Outdoor Advertising in June 1970 and left in August 1996 as vice president of operations. After leaving Gannett, he and his son, Lee, along with their wives, started North Construction Service. He retired from the business in 2002.

Jerry was hard-working, knowledgeable, well-respected and loved by those who had the privilege to meet and work with him.

Jerry is predeceased by his parents, sister, Janice (Dave) Mikkelson, and brother, Ronald North. He is survived by his devoted wife, Norma, three children, Lee (Susan), Brett and Vonda North, and granddaughter, Emma (Isaac) Hite. He also is survived by his sister Barbara Ulferts and many in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jerry was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. A true servant of the Lord, he showed kindness and gave time to everyone he met. Lee has often referred to him as John Wayne, and he was indeed that to those of us who knew him well. He will be deeply missed.

A memorial service and light luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the First Lutheran Church. 4000 Concord Blvd., Concord.
