Nineteen Hand Horse offers a rollicking ride
CLAYTON, CA (Mar. 19, 2022) — Because Clayton’s Nineteen Hand Horse is an outlaw country band, Mark Montijo wanted the name to reflect a strong, iconic country image.
It harkens back to when he was 4 years old, growing up on a thoroughbred horse ranch in Southern California where his father worked.
“One day, the Budweiser Clydesdales truck pulled into our ranch,” he recalls. “I remember standing there when they unloaded the horses and being in awe of how incredible they were. They were the most beautiful creatures I had ever seen.”
The height of a horse is measured in hands, with 1 hand equal to 4 inches. Budweiser Clydesdales are 18-19 hands tall – about 6 feet, 4 inches.
“The measurement is taken from the ground up to the highest point of a horse’s withers, the top of the shoulder where the neck joins the body. A standard adult horse measures 14-17 hands,” Montijo notes.
Nineteen Hand Horse is playing at the Clayton Club, 6096 Main St., for the next few months. For more information, call 925-673-0440.
