CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Aug. 28, 2023) — Mt. Diablo, College Park and Clayton Valley Charter football teams, each with a new head coach, came away with victories in the opening weekend of games while perennial powerhouse De La Salle was run off their field in the second half of the Spartans first game.

The Red Devils outscored visiting Deer Valley of Antioch 39-28 for coach Fetuao Mua at Hart Fairclough Stadium. It was an historic night as transfer Herschel Turner burst on the scene after moving to the Concord school last winter from Freedom High. He carried the ball 16 times and gained 377 yards and scored six touchdowns. After one game Turner holds the highest single-game rushing yardage and touchdown counts in Mt. Diablo’s 100 plus years of football history.

Nick Tisa, who took over as full-time head coach for the Ugly Eagles last spring, saw his CVCHS team blank Salinas 17-0, reversing last year’s opening game result between the teams.

Fan fight

The strangest debut was for College Park’s Casey Moreno. His first game in charge was abruptly stopped in the second quarter due to fighting in the stands. The Falcons led 14-0 at Fremont of Oakland and that is how the final score will be recorded. It was one of two Bay Area games stopped due to off field violence in the opening weekend of games.

Orange Lutheran comes from the powerhouse Trinity League in Southern California that also features America’s top two high school teams Mater Dei and Saint John Bosco. In Concord, the team scored three second-half touchdowns to pull away from DLS after a 14-14 halftime tie. The Spartans failed to score on their final seven drives and now travel to San Mateo this Saturday to meet NorCal’s No. 1 team Serra, which defeated Folsom in a showdown of this fall’s top two preseason NorCal teams.
