Stephanie Zablah-KrugerCONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Dec. 22, 2022) — Many dogs become anxious due to the increased activity during the holidays, leading to them escape from their homes or become injured.

A lot of owners wait too long to talk to their vets and/or trainers about addressing anxiety and noise phobias. Here are some things you can do to help your pet stay calm and relaxed this holiday season:

Make sure your pet has a safe place to be, such as a private room in the home.

Keep your pet calm and relaxed by providing toys or treats, or by talking to them in a soothing voice. Play calming music in the background of their private area.

Consult your veterinarian for advice on how to help him relax. There may be medications or training techniques that can help.

If there will be fireworks in your area on New Year’s Eve, train your dog to get used to the noise. Play recordings of fireworks at a low volume and gradually increase the volume over time. Use treats to help associate the sound with something desirable.

If the anxiety is bad enough, consider going somewhere where fireworks aren’t going to be a problem.

Through training and gradual exposure, you may be able to help your pet get used to the noise of fireworks and the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
