Concord to close open space areas due to extreme fire danger

Concord closes open spaces due to Red Flag/Critical Fire Conditions

CONCORD, CA (Sept. 9, 2021) — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Red Flag Warning beginning Thursday, September 9 at 5 p.m. until Friday, September 10 at 11 a.m. due to critical fire weather conditions. A combination of lightning, strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

The City of Concord is closing its open space areas with developed walking trails, including Lime Ridge Open Space and portions of Newhall Park, effective Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Lime Ridge parking lots at Treat Boulevard and Montecito Drive will also be closed. The City plans to reopen the spaces on September 10 at 11 a.m., unless the Red Flag Warning is extended.

City staff has consulted with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and determined that closing the open space is in the best interest of public safety and preservation of the natural environment.
