Assembly office staff can help with unemployment and other pressing issues

Over the past few months, COVID-19 has brought on an unprecedented and rapid transformation to daily life in California.

As our state is experiencing a new spike in cases, we must all become more vigilant and cautious. In order to do our part to stop the spread, the Legislature has adjourned for an extended recess until we can safely return to Sacramento.

In accordance with health orders from Gov. Gavin Newsom and county officials, we are not taking physical meetings at my capitol and district offices. But my staff and I are still working full-time to serve you and are available to take your phone calls and emails.

Far too many in our community are struggling right now, and my offices can help you navigate state agencies that might provide assistance during these difficult times. Since the pandemic began, my staff and I have helped hundreds of constituents with issues specifically related to the Employment Development Department, and we are available to help you, too. If you need help navigating any state agency or have questions about what resources may be available to you, please call my Concord office at 925-521-1511, or 925-338-0766 for assistance in Spanish.

While ensuring the safety of our community during the COVID-19 outbreak remains my top priority, I am continuing my efforts to move legislation forward that will address some of California’s biggest challenges and help those who need it the most. When the Legislature returns from recess, I will continue my multi-year fight to ensure that our state is prepared for any disaster or emergency by funding life-saving air ambulance services. This pandemic has demonstrated the importance of being prepared for any emergency, and it would be a mistake to let this funding lapse now.

This pandemic has also shown us how our other challenges do not pause when a new crisis begins. California has been working to overcome a housing crisis decades in the making, and it would be foolish for us to stop trying to address it now. This year, I am continuing my efforts to increase our housing supply by authoring legislation (Assembly Bill 831) that will help us build new housing faster and more affordably. I also remain committed to supporting legislation that will immediately help hard-working Californians who are trying to keep a roof over their heads.

We know far too well that some of the most vulnerable Californians are the ones who are struggling the most because of this outbreak. During the budget process, I advocated for funding for family justice centers that are on the frontlines helping victims of intrapersonal violence who are currently facing additional risk and hardships due to the pandemic. I have also recently introduced legislation (AB767) that will increase access to compensation for victims of violence. It is more important than ever that we step up our efforts to help those most in need of support.

Together we will get through these challenging times and return to a more routine lifestyle, with newfound gratitude for our families, friends and communities. In the meantime, I urge everyone to adhere to state and local health orders, wear a face covering and maintain a physical distance from others. Remember to prioritize your mental and physical health, to do things that bring you peace and joy and even safely enjoy the outdoors. Let’s all do our part to keep each other safe.
