Arrest made in Concord Thanksgiving hit-and-run case

CONCORD, CA (Nov. 29, 2023) — The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office has filed charges on a 19-year-old Concord resident for Gross Vehicular Manslaughter while intoxicated.

The incident occurred on Thanksgiving day last week. Concord Police Officers had responded to the area of Oak Grove Road and Treat Blvd., on the report of a hit-and-run vehicle collision. Once on scene, they determined that a second related collision had occurred at Oak Grove Road and Ryan Road. A passenger in one of the vehicles, an 86-year-old male, was transported to John Muir Hospital where he later died.

After an investigation, police arrested Damian Lopez-Avelino of Concord. The charges against the Concord resident includ:

  • PC191.5 – Gross Vehicular Manslaughter while intoxicated
  • VC23153(a) & VC23153(b) – DUI causing serious bodily injury
  • VC20001 – Hit & Run with injury
  • VC12500(a) – Driving a motor vehicle while unlicensed.

Lopez-Avelino is being held without bail at the Martinez Detention Facility.

The Concord Police Dept. released the following statement: “This event was truly a tragedy for our community and we are committed to working with our partners at the District Attorney’s Office to bring justice to the victim’s and their families.”
