CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Nov. 17, 2024) — Impersonating the police: According to the Martinez Police Department, several people have been contacted through a fake phone number that appears to come from the dispatch center.
Martinez PD reminds everyone to always double-check phone numbers or emails before responding and to report any suspicious activity. Meanwhile, look for the latest arrest report from Concord PD.
Holiday hoopla: Tree lightings, craft fairs and holiday-themed performances abound in the coming weeks, but let’s not skip over Concord’s 5K Concord Turkey Trot and Kids Run on Thanksgiving Day. The Newhall Park event raises funds for Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa. For a list of more holiday celebrations, see the Pioneer’s calendar.
Fair housing strategies: Concord Councilmember Laura Nakamura offers her thoughts on state mandates to addressing housing needs in the city. “It is particularly important to me that there be robust community engagement in this process,” she notes. “Collaboration to work out balanced solutions reflects our concern for our neighbors, present and future.”

Bev Britton graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of North Dakota and moved to the Bay Area with her soon-to-be husband Jim in 1986. She was features editor at the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek before becoming managing editor of the Contra Costa Sun in Lafayette in 1995. She retired from newsrooms in 2001, but an ad for the Clayton Pioneer drew her back in. The family moved to Lake Wildwood in the Gold Country a few years ago - but working at the Pioneer keeps her in touch with her old neighborhoods in Concord and Clayton.
