Local VFW helps host POW/MIA service

ALAMEDA, CA (Sept. 4, 2024) — Clayton resident Mark Steinberg is proud to chair this year’s POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony, scheduled for Sept. 21 aboard the USS Hornet.

“This event is typically held in Southern California, so we are honored to be hosting locally this year,” said Steinberg, who is commander of VFW Post 1525 Concord/Clayton.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of California sponsors the event. It is a call to remember those held as Prisoners of War and military members still Missing in Action. According to the department’s website, there are currently 83,000 unaccounted-for personnel – with those missing going back to World War II.

“Every new identification helps bring closure to one more American family and is one step closer to achieving the fullest possible accounting of our missing. It is also a re-commitment to those serving in uniform today that America will bring you home.”

VFW and its auxiliary members can attend for free if they bring their ID cards. Non-member entry is $25, $15 for seniors, military and students, $10 aged 7-17 and under 6 free.
