So This Happened…Week of Oct. 2 through 8, 2023
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Oct. 8, 2023) — In honor of Harvey Milk’s historic debate defending LGBTQIA+ rights, Northgate High School will host a remembrance at 6 p.m. Oct. 16 in the school gym. In addition to speakers and archival film and photographs, officials will unveil a commemorative plaque.
“We are excited to celebrate this historic moment and the fact that Northgate High School is forever linked to Harvey Milk’s inspiring legacy,” said Northgate teacher Meg Honey. (Read the full story)
Bigger than life arts celebration: Art and Music Jam in the Park will take over Concord’s Todos Santos Plaza on Oct. 14 and 15. Local artists will create large-scale original works, and there will be a display of supersized lighted sculptures along with spoken word poetry and live music.
The sweet, and awful, truth: With Halloween just weeks ago, Pioneer columnist Nathalie Montijo writes about the danger of sugars that lurk in processed foods. In another sign of the pending holiday, the Bay Area Crisis Nursery and Concord Library are both holding kids’ costume drives. Check out the Pioneer calendar for more Halloween events.

Bev Britton graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of North Dakota and moved to the Bay Area with her soon-to-be husband Jim in 1986. She was features editor at the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek before becoming managing editor of the Contra Costa Sun in Lafayette in 1995. She retired from newsrooms in 2001, but an ad for the Clayton Pioneer drew her back in. The family moved to Lake Wildwood in the Gold Country a few years ago - but working at the Pioneer keeps her in touch with her old neighborhoods in Concord and Clayton.
