CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Sept. 18, 2022) — Even as E.J Phair closed it Concord location last month, a company official urged residents to patronize local restaurants and retailers.

“Please support your local mom and pop business when you can. These businesses are what make your local communities unique and special. Any profits they make stay local,’’ said a spokesperson for the brew pub, which still has locations in Pittsburg and Alamo.

Election update: Three Concord City Council seats and two in Clayton are on the November ballot. Pioneer political writer Peggy Spear takes a look at the issues and the candidates’ backgrounds. Interested voters can also attend a forum on the state propositions and the Clayton City Council on Oct. 10.

It’s taco time: Concord’s popular Taco Trail Challenge continues through Oct. 15, with those eating at the most spots in the running for the championship trophy. The restaurant with the most visits will win the fan favorite prize.

Changing of the guard in Pleasant Hill: In his Pioneer column, Police Chief Bryan Hill talks about his decision to retire in November, writing: “I leave this position proud of the many things the men and women of the Pleasant Hill Police Department have accomplished.” Capt. Scott Vermillion will take over as acting chief.
