So This Happened… May 23 through 29, 2022
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (May 29, 2022) — On this Memorial Day weekend, Pleasant Hill Mayor Michael Harris reflects on the grandeur of the WWII Memorial on the National Mall and shares the stories of three individuals whose war experiences had an impact on him. The Pioneer also recalls the tale of the bomber nicknamed Thunderbird.
Naval Weapons Station update: The Concord City Council agreed to extend the negotiation time with Concord First Partner’s (CFP) over its plan for the former Naval Weapons Station, but the council did not approve requested changes to the Exclusive Negotiation Agreement (ENA). Jeb Elmore of CFP said they were “disappointed with the results of our proposed ENA amendment but very much appreciate the city’s commitment to CFP by extending our negotiations to promote continued dialogue.”
It’s graduation season: Students at Gregory Gardens Elementary made a “tunnel of Gators” to welcome the graduating seniors from College Park High, who took a walk down memory lane at their old school in Pleasant Hill. Meanwhile, four local high schools celebrated 18 student athletes who plan to play college sports after graduation.

Bev Britton graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of North Dakota and moved to the Bay Area with her soon-to-be husband Jim in 1986. She was features editor at the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek before becoming managing editor of the Contra Costa Sun in Lafayette in 1995. She retired from newsrooms in 2001, but an ad for the Clayton Pioneer drew her back in. The family moved to Lake Wildwood in the Gold Country a few years ago - but working at the Pioneer keeps her in touch with her old neighborhoods in Concord and Clayton.
