So This Happened... Week of Nov. 15-21, 2021
Clockwise from Left: Work off your Thanksgiving calories with some East Bay Parks hiking. Visit the Ruth Bancroft Garden for a special night time light show. Gather in Clayton for the annual holiday tree lighting event Dec. 4.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Nov. 21, 2021) — There’s still time to gather seasonable produce for your Thanksgiving feast at the Tuesday Concord Farmers Market and try one of columnist Debra Morris’ ideas for unique side dishes.

Walk it off: Then, before you run full-sprint into the December holidays, head to an East Bay Park on Friday for a brush with nature. Options include a “Feast Your Eyes on Nature” hike at Black Diamond Mines in Antioch and the “Post-Thanksgiving Hike” in Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park in Oakland.

Ho-ho-holidays: If you’re ready to focus on gift shopping, stop by the Concord Art Association’s Art & Craft Show on Saturday in Todos Santos Plaza. On Monday, the Concord Chamber of Commerce will release more Shop Concord gift cards. Todos Santos Plaza will also be the site of the tree lighting and mayor’s sing-along on Dec. 3. Clayton will follow suit with its downtown tree lighting on Dec. 4. New this year is “Garden of D’Lights,” with thousands of lights and lasers at the Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek.

On the fire front: Thanks to the recent rains, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District has declared an end to the fire season. But Chief Lewis Broschard reminds residents that fire danger is ever-present. “ConFire urges all residents to practice fire safety in all outdoor activities,” he said. “Plan well ahead of the typical spring months’ arrival of fire danger for weed abatement and defensible space creation around properties.”
