So This Happened… Week of July 24 to August 1, 2021
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Aug. 1, 2021) — Gather your family and friends and head outdoors to celebrate this week in Concord – with National Night Out Aug. 3 and the Concord Jazz Festival Aug. 4-8.
National Night Out runs 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Concord Library. The annual community-building event will feature activities for kids, booths from community groups, and visits with members of the Concord Police Department and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
The “Take 5” Jazz Festival includes free concerts Wednesday-Saturday, Aug. 4-7, and closes Sunday, Aug. 8, with a special ticketed event at the Galindo Home and Gardens.
“This year’s live events will be greatly anticipated and appreciated by locals and visitors,” says Elaine Schroth of Visit Concord. “They’ll be able to immerse themselves in live jazz with family, friends and fellow jazz fanatics.”
Meanwhile, Clayton’s Concerts in the Grove series will continue 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, with the Cocktail Monkeys in the downtown park. And, Walnut Creek is hosting a month-long celebration of the performing, visual and culinary arts with activities for the entire family. “We hope that residents of Walnut Creek and neighboring cities will join us downtown for these fun events and help bring back a sense of community and vibrancy to our great city,” says Mayor Kevin Wilk.
Fall football lineup: De La Salle’s Oct. 1 televised game against St. Frances Academy of Baltimore will be a highlight of the local prep football season. Then on Oct. 5, De La Salle will take on Clayton Valley Charter High School, which has been reclassified to Division 1.
“We are excited to have Friday night lights back next school year,” says Leo Lopoz of De La Salle. “We have an extremely competitive schedule that consists of quality local, state and nationally ranked programs.” Read full story.
Vaccination update: Health officials from three Bay Area counties – including Contra Costa – are urging employers to consider requiring their workforces to get fully vaccinated against COVID-19. “Workers who are unvaccinated against COVID-19 pose a substantial health and financial risk to the workplace,” said Dr. Chris Farnitano, Contra Costa’s health officer. “Most importantly, workplace exposures have led to serious illnesses and deaths.” Read full story.

Bev Britton graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of North Dakota and moved to the Bay Area with her soon-to-be husband Jim in 1986. She was features editor at the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek before becoming managing editor of the Contra Costa Sun in Lafayette in 1995. She retired from newsrooms in 2001, but an ad for the Clayton Pioneer drew her back in. The family moved to Lake Wildwood in the Gold Country a few years ago - but working at the Pioneer keeps her in touch with her old neighborhoods in Concord and Clayton.
