So This Happened…Week of May 3-9
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (May 9, 2021) — With the Red Flag Warning continuing until 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, the city of Concord has closed all its open space areas to protect against wildfires.
According to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, this winter’s low rainfall totals contributed to the early arrival of fire season. As of May 3, Con Fire returned to full responses for all grass, vegetation and wildland fires. Read the full story.
A soaring victory: The Lindsay Wildlife Experience reopened its Exhibit Hall on May 5, which returns the organization to its pre-pandemic operations. The Exhibit Hall features a new habitat for its bald eagle ambassador, Atsá.
“We are very excited to receive visitors in our museum again and witness the awed faces of children seeing wildlife up close,” said executive director Carlos de la Rosa. Read the full story.
Mascot musings: The Mt. Diablo Unified School District board is discussing changing the Ygnacio Valley Warriors and Concord High Minutemen nicknames.
“Our primary focus is leading our students through the remainder of this challenging year,” said Superintendent Adam Clark. “The mascot conversation is long overdue, and it is time to ensure that all students, staff and community members feel comfortable with images at our schools.” Read the full story.

Bev Britton graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of North Dakota and moved to the Bay Area with her soon-to-be husband Jim in 1986. She was features editor at the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek before becoming managing editor of the Contra Costa Sun in Lafayette in 1995. She retired from newsrooms in 2001, but an ad for the Clayton Pioneer drew her back in. The family moved to Lake Wildwood in the Gold Country a few years ago - but working at the Pioneer keeps her in touch with her old neighborhoods in Concord and Clayton.
