Concord Police look to add drones to crime-fighting tools
CONCORD, CA — Will flying drones soon join the Concord Police force? The city is looking at the potential creation of a Public Safety Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) program.
For now, the Police Department wants to know what you think of the idea. A series of neighborhood discussions will help them get input from Concord community.
Small, remotely operated UAS, also commonly referred to as “drones,” have successfully been implemented in public safety agencies across the country. These programs have proven an efficient and effective tools that enhance first-responder services.
Several first-responder agencies in Contra Costa County already have UAS programs in place. The Concord Police look forward to hearing from community members as the department explores the development options for Concord’s own UAS program.
They have organized each meeting by neighborhood group. A couple meetings happened this week for neighborhoods including Baldwin Park, Bonifacio/Salvio, Holbrook Heights, Mt Diablo, and North Todos Santos. They also held meetings for Dana Estates and East Concord.
The next round of meetings happen as follows:
Monday, May 17, 6-7:30 p.m.: Neighborhood groups: Colony Park, Fair Oaks, Oak Grove, Del Rio, Tree Garden/Mohr, Orchard, Lyon Circle, Ryan, Ygnacio, Sierra, Via Montanas/Navaronne, San Miguel, Detroit Ave, Concord Mobile Home Park, Town & Country, Tioga, Sunny Acres, and Lime Ridge.
