Pioneer Athlete Spotlight: Samantha ‘Kiki’ Mein
Grade: Senior, School: Carondelet High, Sports: Water Polo, Swimming
Mein is an athlete at heart who loves to have a laugh along the way. She embraces the challenges that come with competing as well as the lifelong friendships she continues by playing team sports. As a four-year varsity water polo player for the Cougars she has had a rewarding experience and is hoping to be part of a fourth successive North Coast Section playoff team. She was elected a team captain for the second year in a row this fall. “I really appreciate my teammates and the leadership skills I get to use as captain,” said Mein, who has garnered all-EBAL honors the past two years.
She was off to a quick start with 11 goals and five assists in the first three Carondelet games, all victories. Water polo coach Cat Arroyo says, “Kiki is a terrific asset to this program. Her speed, defensive prowess and outside shooting are vital to our success. Outside of the pool Kiki leads with a smile. She is a competitor and is motivated to finish her time at Carondelet playing to the best of her ability.” When the Concord resident isn’t in the pool, she has maintained a 3.8 GPA. She received the NCS Presidential Academic Award as well as recognized as an Academic all-America by USA Water Polo this past year. Mein hopes to play water polo in college next year.
