New Clayton mayor eager to help unify divided city

CLAYTON, CA—Hello fellow Claytonians. I am honored to have been chosen by the City Council as your new mayor.

While this is a somewhat ceremonial position, I take this responsibility seriously.

I have been listening to your concerns and desires over the past few years and hope that we can come together, rather than oppose each other, in a civil, positive and constructive way to better our city.

I intend to use this column to inform and enlighten our citizens. You may see some guest writers here, too.

I look forward to hearing from you and am always available for your questions or comments at cwolfe@ci.clayton.ca.us or 925-673-7324.
Here are some Clayton happenings:

At the Dec. 1 council meeting, new council members Holly Tillman and Peter Cloven, along with returning Councilman Jim Diaz, were sworn in. Cloven was then elected vice mayor. Congratulations to all.

Outgoing Councilwoman Tuija Catalano and Mayor Julie Pierce were recognized for their years of service to Clayton. Tributes came from citizens, friends and city staff. Both will be missed. To watch the video, go to the Clayton website. A celebration of Pierce’s long career will take place at a future council meeting.

New City Manager

New city manager Reina Schwartz begins her job at City Hall on Dec. 15. Reina has a stellar resume and is highly qualified to lead our city staff. We are excited to have her with us.

Much appreciation goes to outgoing interim city manager Fran Robustelli for her efforts and accomplishments on behalf of Clayton. We wish her well in all her future endeavors.

The virtual Clayton Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is available for viewing on YouTube at youtu.be/4VSrfxC1RTI. Thanks to AJ Chippero, Debby Bruno and the Clayton Business & Community Association for making this happen.

Keeping loved ones safe

At the time of this writing, COVID numbers continue to climb in Contra Costa, California, our country and our world. Contra Costa County has reported nearly 25,000 positive cases with more than 260 deaths and remains in the most restrictive, purple tier. While we all would like to return to normal life as soon as possible, it is so very important to take precautions and follow CDC and county health guidelines to stay personally safe and to protect our loved ones and those around us.

Happy holidays.
