Mt. Diablo Educators to Deliver Handwritten Messages about Vacancies to School Board
CONCORD, CA (Feb. 22, 2023) — Members of the Mt. Diablo Education Association (MDEA) will speak up and deliver handwritten messages about the district’s 37 vacancies at the Feb. 22, 2023, MDUSD Board of Education meeting. The MDEA includes 1,366 hardworking teachers, librarians, nurses, counselors, resource specialists, inclusion specialists, audiologists, and speech and language pathologists in the Mount Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD).
Educators are concerned about these vacancies because students are left without qualified educators at their schools. Part of this issue is that salaries do not keep pace with inflation, setting up MDUSD to not be competitive with other districts. MDEA is also urging MDUSD Board of Education members to make changes to attract and retain qualified educators in MDUSD through higher salaries to attract the very best.
“Our students need qualified educators and constant support to thrive in the classroom. The district is in a good position with ongoing funds to pay for ongoing salary increases. Educators are calling on the MDUSD Board of Education to act now to avoid an unprecedented number of vacancies next year,” said MDEA President Anita Johnson.
