Martinez Police warn of scammers impersonating officers
MARTINEZ, CA (Nov. 17, 2024) — Recently, several citizens have been contacted by person(s) claiming to represent law enforcement (even impersonating Martinez Police Officers via a fake phone number that appears to be from our dispatch center).
Scammers can use various methods to imitate local phone numbers, and often use threats of arrest or negative legal action to intimidate victims into divulging personal information and/or submitting payment.
Remember, Martinez Police will NEVER ask for money to clear up legal matters/warrants.
Here’s some helpful suggestions to help you keep your information safe:
- Stay Vigilant: If someone contacts you unexpectedly, especially with threats of legal action, fines, or urgent demands, be cautious.
- Verify Contact Information: Always double-check phone numbers or email addresses before responding. Official organizations never ask for sensitive info via text or email.
- Don’t Share Personal Info: Never give out personal, financial, or login information over the phone, via email, or on social media-especially to strangers.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you’re contacted by a potential scammer, report it to the relevant authorities (ie; bank, credit card company, etc.)
