John Marsh House, Marsh Creek Rd., Byron, CA

The Clayton Historical Society will host an historical presentation on the life of Dr. John Marsh and the Stone House during the annual meeting on Thursday, Nov 7.

Marsh heard the shout of “Manifest Destiny” and headed West after graduation from Harvard in 1823. Living in what is now East Contra Costa County, he acquired wealth through his medical practice.

After marrying, he began construction of what is now known as the John Marsh Stone House near Byron. The house was completed in 1856 at a cost of $20,000. It was 60 by 40 feet, three stories high surmounted by a tower.

The building was seriously damaged in the earthquake of 1868 and was later restored without the tower.

Marsh never lived in the house, as he was murdered about the time of its completion.
