High quality photos make decisions difficult for election officials

The natural splendor of Contra Costa County was on full display in the nearly 150 submissions to the Flora and Fauna in Contra Costa County photo contest for the 2020 Primary Election guide.

“We were stunned by the number of high-quality photographs that were submitted about the animals and wildlife that had intricate details and the visual scenery,’’ said Paul Burgarino, former Community Education and Engagement Specialist. “We were really impressed, and it makes you appreciate what we have in Contra Costa County.’’

That number is triple the highest number of submissions previously received for the guide produced for the June 2016 election. There were more first-time participants submitting entries than in the prior competitions.

Rob Shea, of Walnut Creek, a first-time participant, captured the grand prize for his photo of an Aloe polyphylla, more commonly known as a Spiral Aloe, at the Ruth Bancroft Garden and Nursery in Walnut Creek.

Fellow Walnut Creek resident Carol Wall’s photo of a Western Burrowing Owl, entitled “Mad Owl’’, earned runner-up honors. Burrowing owls are considered endangered, threatened, or special concern in nine U.S. states.

Third place went to Danna Knox, of Alamo, who observed a hummingbird coming to enjoy a newly flowering acanthus plant in her photo.

“These tiny flying jewels bring beauty and joy not only to our gardens, but our hearts,” wrote Knox about her entry.

In suggesting themes, officials remind residents that the photos that are submitted should  “capture the uniqueness and beauty of Contra Costa County.’’
