Contra Costa residents awaken to early morning lightning and smoky fires

Contra Costa residents awakened by late-night lightning and smoky firesCLAYTON, CA—A surprise thunder storm swept through the Bay Area early Sunday morning. High winds and numerous lightning strikes brought fears of wildfires and power outages. Reports of residents woken up by the light show appeared on social media. Small amounts of rain fell in some places, but temperatures in Contra Costa are expected to climb back into triple digits by this afternoon.

Several fires appeared in the area of Morgan Territory and Marsh Creek roads near Mt. Diablo State Park. Officials said the fires were putting out a lot of smoke, but not threatening structures. Units from Cal Fire, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District were among those who responded. Marsh Creek Road was reportedly closed at Morgan Territory Road this morning.
