Concord Farmers Market returns to Todos Santos Aug. 18

Concord Farmers Market returns to Todos Santos Aug. 18
It’s apple time at the Rainbow Orchards booth at the Concord farmers market.

The Concord Farmers Market is returning to Todos Santos Plaza starting Tuesday, Aug. 18. The year-around farmers market moved to the parking lot of Concord High School in April to allow for better social distancing during the pandemic. But now they are back in downtown Concord. And just in time for apple season.

Head straight to Rainbow Orchards’ booth for some early-season apples and fresh-pressed cider.

Fall is almost here and the best way to get a taste of the season is to bite into a crisp, mountain-grown apple. Right now they are offering Gala, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith apples. Later in the season, look for Fuji, Pink Lady, Braeburn, Rome, Winesap and Arkansas Black apples. Their on-site cider mill presses fresh, unfiltered, all natural, delicious cider blended from the perfect combination of apples.

Fresh-pressed cider

Rainbow Orchards is a third-generation family farm based in Camino. Their Apple Hill farm has provided the finest mountain-grown fruit since 1977. Through the year, they grow some of the best apples, pears, peaches, nectarines and blueberries you’ve ever tasted. All this delicious fruit, as well as fresh-pressed apple cider, is available each week at the Concord Farmers Market – depending on the season. If you decide to take a trip to Camino, their farm is at 2569 Larsen Dr. Be sure to stop by their famous Bake Shop and Apple Barn.

Camino, east of Placerville, is a high-altitude area in the Gold Country. Farming at 3,500 feet gives them the cool mountain nights that really bring out the flavor of their fruit. They hand-pick it at the peak of ripeness and rush it to local farmers market in their refrigerated truck. It’s a little bit of extra works, but the taste makes it all worthwhile.

Rainbow Orchards Apple Crisp

  • 2 lbs. (5-5½ c.) tart Rainbow Orchards Golden Delicious apples
  • ¼ c. water
  • ½ c. sugar
  • ½ c. brown sugar
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • ½ c. flour
  • 1/3 c. rolled oats
  • ½ c. butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Peel and slice apples. Place in a shallow, one-quart casserole dish. Sprinkle with the water. Set aside.

Combine dry ingredients. Cut the butter into the dry mixture until it resembles small clumps. Do not stir together.

Sprinkle topping evenly over the apples. Do not mix the two. Cover and bake for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake for another 30 minutes. Topping should be crisp over the steaming hot apple layer.

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Face coverings and social distancing are required. Please be respectful of the health and safety of others while you enjoy the farmers market in downtown Concord.
