UPDATE, Feb. 8, 2021: CVS has announced that the originally planned start of vaccinations at CVS stores on Feb. 11 has changed to Feb. 12. They have yet to announce the list of local stores that will have the vaccine available.

CONCORD, CA—The Biden administration announced today that it will start shipping 1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine per week to pharmacies across the U.S. CVS Health has reported that its pharmacies will be among those administering the vaccine in California cities, including Concord.

The company said 335 stores in 11 states would receive vaccines. It has not yet announced which CVS location in Concord will have the vaccine. However, it will start booking appointments on Feb. 9. If things go to plan, CVS will administer its first doses on Thursday, Feb. 11.

The government has allocated 81,900 total doses for California in the initial limited rollout. CVS stores in San Francisco, Lafayette and Moraga will also administer the vaccine.

Safe and convenient

“One of our greatest strengths as a company is our presence in communities across the country, which makes us an ideal partner for administering vaccines in a safe, convenient, and familiar manner,” said Karen S. Lynch, CVS Health’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “We continue to be grateful for the commitment of our frontline colleagues whose dedication has allowed us to deliver care and peace of mind throughout the pandemic.”

To get the vaccine, you must qualify under the state and local eligibility guidelines. Currently, in Contra Costa, you can sign up if you are 65 or older, although priority goes to those over 75. Health care workers and other front-line workers are also eligible (see distribution eligibility for Contra Costa).

Patients must register in advance at CVS.com or through the CVS Pharmacy app. People without online access can contact CVS customer service at (800) 746-7287. Walk-ins will not be accommodated.

Other vaccination sites

As more and more vaccine becomes available, other sites in Contra Costa have also started gearing up.

EMTs, paramedics and support staff from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District set up a vaccination site on Monday in a church parking lot in Hercules. Around 500 people were vaccinated Monday and another 500 on Tuesday.

Contra Costa Health operates a vaccine site at Diablo Valley College as well.

You should check with your health care provider, such as Kaiser or John Muir Health, to find out when you’ll be eligible to get the vaccine through your regular doctor.
