Congressman Mark DeSaulnier moved out of ICU
Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11), who was hospitalized on March 13, has been released from the ICU this week. His sons, Tristan and Tucker DeSaulnier, have released the following statement about their father’s condition.
“Our Dad is a fighter, he has made good progress, and today he moved out of the intensive care unit and will continue to be treated in the hospital for non-COVID pneumonia, and begin a journey towards recovery. This would be difficult enough at any time, but given the daily dangers we all face from the coronavirus, his path ahead is especially complicated.
“Heartfelt concerns and well-wishes from the community, for whom he cares so deeply, have kept Dad going, and we can’t thank everyone enough. We appreciate the kindness during this difficult time, and we hope that you can continue to offer support and time as he heals.
“We are incredibly grateful for the tireless efforts of the ICU doctors, nurses, and hospital staff who cared for our Dad and go above and beyond for everyone who enters their doors.”
Congressman DeSaulnier was admitted to a hospital in Washington D.C. in mid-March to be treated for complications of pneumonia following a traumatic rib fracture. DeSaulnier was injured when he fell during a run. (DeSaulnier has been an avid runner and has completed over 21 marathons) He was in serious but stable condition for several days and the hospital later confirmed that he tested negative for COVID-19. Later his condition deteriorated and he was moved into the ICU.
DeSaulnier was elected to Congress in 2014 and represents California’s 11th Congressional district which includes the majority of Contra Costa County.
