And the winner of Clayton Club Saloon’s 20th annual Chili Contest is…
Defending chili champ Naomi Orcutt took home first prize for the second year in a row at the Clayton Club Saloon’s 20th annual Chili Contest. This was her sixth time entering the community event. Her chili took first-place last year as well. Her chili included turkey and chicken.
The Sunday afternoon gathering benefitted from beautiful weather, with just enough nip in the air to make the chili feel good going down. Judges included City Councilmember Jim Diaz, Clayton Police officer Daryl Englund and Pioneer publisher Bob Steiner who had the delicious task of choosing the winners. Mayor Julie Pierce was the announcer for the event.
Second prize went to Pierce Rivers, who entered the contest for the first time this year. He went with a bison and sage sausage chili. Travis Denten has entered the contest six times, previously winning second place, third place and honorable mention. This year, Denten’s prime rib, turkey and pork chop concoction came in third.
Located on historic Main Street in Clayton, the Clayton Club was established in 1873. It is the second-oldest continuously operating saloon in California. They have live music every weekend. Visit their website for a schedule of events at claytonclubsaloon.com.
