Clayton City Council candidates debate the issues in online forum

CLAYTON, CA—On Monday, Sept. 28, all six of the candidates for Clayton City Council came together to talk about the issues important to Claytonians. The CBCA and Clayton AAUW co-sponsored the online event while the League of Women Voters Diablo Valley provided the non-partisan moderator.

Each candidate had a chance to give an introductory statement, followed by a question/answer period. The answers were limited to 1 minute. Moderator Janet Hoy asked that the candidates remain civil and to avoid personal attacks. The discussion moved smoothly with only a couple minor technical issues here and there. The forum allowed each candidate to make their case as to why they should get your vote.

Questions covered a wide range of topics. Hoy asked candidates to weigh in on what they would like to do if Proposition 15 passes in November and brings more money for education and local government to Clayton. Questions about racism, diversity and inclusivity in Clayton were covered. Hoy asked about city spending issues to discern the differences between each candidate’s positions.

In wrapping up the session, Hoy congratulated the candidates for putting themselves out there and running for office. “It is not for the faint of heart,” she added. And finally she announced that during the Monday debate, she got a notice that ballots for California had just gone out and voters should see them soon.
