Mt. Diablo seeks revenge at Acalanes, where 2023 season ended

CONCORD, CA (Sept. 2, 2024) — Mt. Diablo rode the talents of record-breaking senior runningback Herschel Turner Jr. to the North Cost Section Division IV playoffs last season. The Red Devils were stopped in the NCS opening round in Lafayette when Acalanes defeated them 56-14. The Dons then ran off four more post-season victories and were crowned CIF Division 3-AA champions in December.

Red Devils coach Fetuao Mua sought out a return match with Acalanes and that will happen this Friday evening after both teams won their openers. “We’re excited,” Mua said ahead of Friday’s clash.

Mt. Diablo found itself tied 35-35 when they got the ball with under four minutes remaining of its first game at Deer Valley in Antioch. New quarterback Michael Vasquez led a long drive that he capped off with a five-yard touchdown run with 10 seconds remaining for the winning points in a 42-35 victory.

Next month, the Mt. Diablo Unified School District will begin installing a new turf field at the area’s oldest high school. The Red Devils only had three of its 10 regular season games scheduled for their Concord home field and now will play all 10 games away from home this season.
