Contra Costa’s Tapestry Choir tours Ireland, captivates audiences

Tapestry Singers Choir in Ireland.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (July 17, 2024) — Contra Costa’s Tapestry singing group recently concluded a multi-performance tour of Ireland, showcasing their talents in some of the country’s most historic venues. Their journey, which began on June 14, included performances, sightseeing, and cultural experiences that left both the choir and their audiences spellbound.

The tour kicked off in Dublin, where the group gathered at the Garden of Remembrance before a quick rehearsal at the Abbey Presbyterian Church. The church’s resonant acoustics enhanced the choir’s mix of soprano and alto voices, setting the stage for their first performance at St. Nicholas Collegiate Church in Galway. The medieval church’s ancient stones echoed with a harmonious blend of religious and secular music.

In Killarney, the choir performed at St. Mary’s Church of the Sloes, earning a standing ovation from the full house. Their experience in Killarney also included a scenic tour of the Ring of Kerry and a delightful ride through central Killarney in horse-drawn jaunting cars.

A memorable visit to Jerpoint Park in Kilkenny allowed the choir members to connect with St. Nicholas, whose relic is housed at the site. The group also enjoyed a dynamic sheep-herding demonstration by Scamp, a talented border collie.

The abbey, formerly a castle on the shores of Lake Pollacappul, provided a stunning backdrop for the choristers’ music.

Returning to Dublin, the choir performed at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the national cathedral of the Church of Ireland. They concluded their tour with visits to the St. James’s Gate Brewery, home of Guinness Beer, and a high tea at the Shelbourne Hotel. Their final performance took place at St. Andrews Church in Dublin’s Westland Row.

This tour marked a significant moment for the choir as director Cindy Krausgrill announced her retirement after over 20 years with Tapestry Ringers and Singers, making the tour a poignant and celebratory farewell.
