Creating sculptures with multigenerational hands at Pleasant Hill Library

PLEASANT HILL, CA (July 10, 2024) — Young and old alike braved the sweltering triple digit July heat to take part in an evening of art at the Pleasant Hill Library on July 2.

Drawing on inspiration from photos of pieces done by Japanese American sculptor Ruth Asawa, children, their parents and even grandparents transformed toilet paper and paper towel cardboard tubes using scissors and tape to create their own distinct sculptures.

The Graves family of Martinez saw three generations, including Grandmother Ellen, her daughter Roxanne, and granddaughter Ellen, 10, each trying their hand, while Pleasant Hill resident Linda Abbey looked on as her grandson, Luca, 4, visiting from Switzerland, focused on his creation.

Leo Huang, of Lafayette, taking part with his 3-year-old daughter, Amber, welcomed the art activity for the chance to expose his children to new experiences and do it hands on.

David Scholz is back in journalism as a freelance writer and photographer after nearly two decades in education. Prior to moving into teaching in 2000, he worked as a full-time journalist since 1988 for rural community and small daily newspapers in Central Ohio and Northern Nevada, and later in California with The Business Journal in Fresno and dailies in the Bay Area, including The Oakland Tribune and The San Francisco Chronicle. More recently Scholz also worked in an editing, writing, and page layout role with the Rossmoor News.
