CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (June 30, 2024) — Clayton deli owner John Canesa was recovering over the weekend after a June 25 altercation with a customer left him with six stab wounds.
Officers arrested 45-year-old Peter Kerns of Concord in front of Canesa’s Brooklyn Heros in the Town Center. Canesa’s wife Priscilla said Kerns was acting erratically and verbally harassing customers and their teen daughter, who was behind the window counter.

Making the world a better place: Northgate student Mark Burenko is once again asking fellow teens to join his “If I could charge the world” project, which connects them to students in Ukraine via Zoom to help them learn English. “The war destroyed a lot of schools. And even in the schools that are still there, students either have to work online because they don’t have a bomb shelter or have to frequently interrupt classes to hide during air raid warnings,” he says. “Learning English is very important for Ukrainians right now, since that is what’s used to communicate internationally.” Read the complete story.
