Contra Costa County Board of Education accepting applications for student member

PLEASANT HILL, CA (Apr. 5, 2024) — The Contra Costa County Board of Education (CCCBOE) began accepting applications this week for a student member for the 2024-25 school year. Rising juniors and seniors can apply.

The Board will accept applications until Friday, April 26, 2024, at 5 p.m.

For the second year, students can now serve as members of the CCBOE. Currently, Sophia Nguyen and Daphne Milich serve as the Board’s student members. Nguyen comes from El Cerrito High School in the West Contra Costa Unified School District. Milich attends Monte Vista High School in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District

Student members of the Contra Costa County Board of Education advocate on behalf of students and act as full members of the board with certain exceptions. They can make motions that the Board may act upon. They can also cast preferential votes on all matters except those subject to closed session. Preferential votes are recorded in the minutes and cast before the official vote of the County Board. Preferential votes do not affect the final numerical outcome of a vote.

Student board members cannot participate in or receive closed session materials because those discussions often include topics such as student discipline or other sensitive matters.

Any student enrolled in a public high school in Contra Costa County who will be a junior or senior in the 2024-25 school year can apply. Students who currently attend or have previously attended a CCCOE school or program will get priority. Those with an immediate family member who currently attends or has previously attended a CCCOE school or program also gets priority.

Applicants will be interviewed by an ad hoc committee of the CCCBOE and voted on by the full Board.
