When to hire movers and how to choose the right one
(Nov. 13, 2023) — Moving to a new home can be an exciting yet challenging endeavor.
One of the crucial decisions to make is whether to hire professional movers or tackle the task yourself. Here is information to help guide you through the process of deciding whether to hire movers and, if so, how to select the best moving company for your needs.
Evaluate your situation
The first step in determining whether to hire professional movers is to assess your unique circumstances.
You’ll want to consider the distance of your move. Are you moving locally or over a long distance, or even out of state? The farther the distance, the more beneficial professional movers can be.
Next, determine the size of your move. Are you moving a large quantity of contents? The size of your move will directly impact the effort and time required.
Also pay attention to your time constraints. Do you have a flexible schedule or do you need to move quickly? Professional movers and packers can significantly expedite this process.
Finally, what is your budget? While hiring movers may be costly, it can be cost-effective when considering the time, effort and stress it can save.
Other factors
Pros: Professional movers are experienced and efficient, ensuring a smoother and quicker move. Also, professional moving companies understand how to pack and handle your belongings – reducing the risk of damage. Most movers have insurance so if something goes wrong, your belongings should be covered. Finally, hiring movers can alleviate the stress and physical strain of moving.
Cons: Professional moving services can be pricey, especially for long-distance moves. You also may have less control over the process compared to moving yourself.
Some of my clients adopt a hybrid approach where they order a POD and load many of their belongings themselves during the staging and sale process. Once the home closes, they have the POD delivered to their new home and then hire professional movers for the remaining items.
Finding the right fit
Research local moving companies. Read online reviews and ask for recommendations from friends, family or your local real estate agent.
Ensure the company is licensed and insured. Ask for proof of insurance to protect your belongings.
Get quotes from multiple moving companies. Make sure you’re comparing apples to apples when reviewing the quotes.
Once you’ve selected a moving company, review the moving contract carefully including terms, pricing and any additional services or added fees.
The decision to hire movers or handle a move on your own should be based on a careful evaluation of your specific situation. When opting for professional movers, take time to research and select a reputable company that aligns with your needs and budget. If you choose to handle the move on your own, make sure you have the time and physical ability to take on such a task.
With the right movers on your side, the transition to your new home can be less stressful.
