Obituary — Alex Su Ying Go of Concord,
August 1, 1933 – October 12, 2023
CONCORD, CA (Oct. 20, 2023) — Alex Su Ying Go, 90, of Concord, California, was born the oldest of four children (one son and three daughters) on Aug. 1, 1933, in China. His father brought his wife and children from China to Vicksburg, Miss. in 1948. Alex worked in his father’s grocery store throughout high school.
Alex graduated from Tulane University in 1957 and Tulane University Medical School in 1961. He married his wife, Mayo Fong, in 1961. After medical school and residency, he started practicing family medicine with Mayo’s brother, Fun Fong, in Hughes, Ark. and later set up a solo practice in Blytheville, Ark.. In 1967, he was drafted into the US Army and served in Vietnam for one year. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal for meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces.
After he returned from Vietnam, he was stationed at Beaumont Hospital in El Paso, Texas as Chief Medical Officer for one year and was promoted to the rank of Major. He was honorably discharged from the army and moved the family to Southern California where he started working as a family physician. He joined a private practice in Anaheim, Calif. and subsequently opened his own practice, Garden Park Medical Group, for more than 20 years. In the latter part of his career, he had a combined practice with his wife for 12 more years before retiring in 2001.
Alex was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved going on hunting trips to Africa, Mexico, and many places in the United States. He also went on fishing trips to Alaska with his son and locally with the SIRS fishing club. He was an outstanding cook and shared his delicious food with his family and friends. Alex loved sports including playing tennis with his family and watching NFL football with his children. When his children were grown, he spent time traveling with his wife.
Alex is survived by his wife, Mayo Fong Go, as well as his three children, Steven Go (Sharon Yee Go), Cynthia Go (Dale C. Wong), and Alan Stanley Go (Joan C. Lo); his five grandchildren, Shelby Go, Zoe T. Wong, Zachary R. Wong, Rachel E. Go, and Megan G. Go; and many other loving relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Nov. 4, 2023, at 1 p.m. at the Contra Costa Gospel Church, 2460 Buena Vista Ave., Walnut Creek.
