Get a Behind-the-Scenes Look at the World of Wastewater in Contra Costa County
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Feb. 10, 2023) — Ask anyone what they think about their sewer service, and they will likely say that as long as their toilet flushes, they have nothing to think about. But for those who wonder what happens after that dirty water disappears from view, Central San invites you to attend their Citizens’ Academy. Central San Academy provides a free, interactive, behind-the-scenes look at a core service that seldom sees the spotlight: wastewater treatment.
Participants in the Academy learn how Central San operates as a government agency; how it is increasing recycled water use throughout central Contra Costa County; and how it cleans wastewater using biology, chemistry, engineering, and technology. They also tour its treatment plant, laboratory, recycled water fill station, and household hazardous waste collection facility.
Cleaning millions of gallons of wastewater every day
“Central San Academy demystifies the work we do,” said Roger S. Bailey, Central San’s General Manager. “Participants get an in-depth, inside look at what it takes to clean millions of gallons of wastewater every day. But just as significantly, they learn what we’re doing to manage costs, better protect our environment, and prepare for the future.”
The Academy is FREE, but interested individuals must apply. Classes will be held four Tuesday evenings, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., on February 21, February 28, March 21, and March 28. In addition, there will be a daytime facilities tour the week of March 6. The classes are held at Central San’s facilities at 5019 Imhoff Place in Martinez. Refreshments will be provided. Participants must be 18 or older. Apply by February 20, 2023 – space is limited!
