Oakhurst golfers donate to First Tee, John Muir Foundation
CLAYTON, CA (Jan. 16, 2023) — Golf groups at Oakhurst Country Club raised money for two local charities at successful events late last year.
The Men’s Club donated $12,750 to First Tee of Contra Costa, while the Senior Skins gave $9,820 to the John Muir Health Foundation.
Popular Men’s Club event
For the past six years, the Oakhurst Men’s Club has designated a local cause to benefit from the Ed Lexon tournament. Lexon was the treasurer of the club for almost 30 years and lived in Clayton until his death.
This year, the club selected First Tee of Contra Costa, part of a national non-profit youth organization that teaches life skills through the game of golf.
Outside sponsors donated more than 50 raffle prizes for the November event. With more than 120 golfers participating, including Lexon’s family and friends, a great day was had by all day.
The Oakhurst Men’s Club was established when the club was built in 1991. It offers members a great way to meet and greet fellow golfers. There is monthly tournament play, including four Northern California Golf Association events, plus individual, team and match play.
Skins welcome longtime members
Meanwhile, the Oakhurst Senior Skins tournament honors former players who began the program at the club’s inception as well as recalling deceased Skins player Bob Lee, who donated his time to the hospital each day until death.
Special guests this year included longtime Clayton resident Glade Gaffney, now 94 and an original member of the Skins, and Anne Marie Taylor, external relations director of John Muir Health.
The group raffled off more than 45 items, thanks to donations from members and local businesses. The total amount raised included $1,420 in matching gifts from Chevron retirees who supported the event. According to Taylor, the full $9,820 was matched from a grant.
The golfers have raised more than $38,000 since the Skins’ tournament inception. Several senior Oakhurst players started the group just after the club’s opening, and the original schedule of playing golf three times a week is still in effect today.
