The Pioneer’s high school football scores update, Nov. 7, 2022

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Nov. 7, 2022) — The final week of the regular season played out with all five games involving local schools ending in lopsided results.

The feature game in all of the Bay Area saw De La Salle end Clayton Valley Charter’s five-game winning streak in resounding fashion as the Spartans spotted the homestanding Ugly Eagles a 6-0 lead and then posted 42 unanswered points before the end of the third quarter with the final scoreless fourth period played with a running clock.

That win insured De La Salle is once again the top seed in the North Coast Section Open/Division I playoffs and placed CVCHS into the third seed below DLS and Pittsburg. Under the recently enacted section format for its top football teams, Clayton Valley Charter is effectively the top seed in the division I bracket which features the third through sixth open division teams. The loser of the expected open division championship matchup between De La Salle and Pitt next weekend will face the winner of the lower bracket for the NCS Division I championship on the Thanksgiving Weekend with that winner moving on in the CIF playoffs.

Several local experts looked at the matchup last Friday as the time De La Salle’s unbeaten streak against NCS opponents would be stopped at 262 games. The huge crowd at Gonsalves Stadium was excited when the Ugly Eagles scored first to take a 6-0 lead but from that point on the DLS offense took control. The home side’s potential scoring drives to cut into the Spartans lead each side of halftime were snuffed out and De La Salle kept the Eagles scoreless after the early touchdown for a convincing victory.

College Park wrapped up the Diablo Athletic League Valley Division championship with a 47-6 victory over Alhambra. Concord High’s remarkable turnaround regular season was completed when the Minutemen won 42-7 over Mt. Diablo for a 9-1 record to compare with last year’s 1-9. Ygnacio Valley was not so fortunate as the Wolves matched last year’s 0-10 mark and will enter the 2023 season with a  24-game losing streak after falling to Berean Christian 47-6. Northgate made it into the playoffs despite losing its fourth DAL Mountain game out of five 33-14 to Acalanes.
