CONCORD, CA (June 3, 2022) — We all know it takes a village to raise a child, but who knew it took a taco to teach them to enjoy reading.

Students in a Reading Intervention Group at Concord High School just wrapped up the city’s famed Taco Trail after being rewarded with a taco for each 100 pages read outside of Holly McCarthy’s class.

“This program started around February, and it took a late push for them to just squeak by and complete the trail this week,” says school psychologist Eric Diamond.

According to the Concord Chamber of Commerce website, the Taco Trail includes nearly 40 locally owned restaurants and taquerias, offering dishes “made from authentic family recipes specific to different regions in Mexico.”

“Reading is fun when it’s for tacos,” says student Kalyn Castro, who went the extra mile with her Taco Trail socks.

Student Nayeli Navarro was also motivated by the taco incentive. “At first I didn’t like reading, but reading for a treat is not bad.”
