Stay alert … Water can hurt.
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY , CA — Since the recent downpours, I’ve fielded lots of questions about the impact of rainwater on a home.
My consistent reply is that our homes are waterproof, but the combination of changing slope demographics and high rains can bring water flow toward a home and into a crawlspace. Standing water can wear at foundational supports and weaken them over time.
If you notice water flowing in the direction of your home, consider reaching out to a contractor to inquire about alternate drainage options in your yard.
Additionally, stay mindful to keep gutters, downspouts, leaders and any drains in your yard clean and free of debris. Doing so will help keep and/or direct water away from your home.
Be sure to remove any standing leaves or vegetation from the roof as this can cause premature wear. To avoid slow and undetected leaks into the attic, check for broken or missing shingles.
Preventative maintenance can go a long way to protect your home from water.
